A recently established business “Native Blende Landscaping” has recently diversified its operations and established a small native plant nursery. They are now growing their own native plants for sale to the public. This need was established due to the lack of varieties of native plants available in Broken Hill for use in our landscaping business.
The advantage of natives over lawns and exotics plants is that natives require very little maintenance, a light prune after flowering is usually sufficient. Once established watering can be dramatically reduced yet still produce an attractive plant that flowers well. Many natives can withstand frost, drought, excessive heat, flood, high winds, poor soils, pests and diseases.
They can be functional; used as a screen, as a bird attractant, for shade or for binding soil. With natives there is always something flowering in your garden throughout the year. Lawns on the other hand are high maintenance; watering, mowing, trimming and fertilizing is a very costly expense while exotics (introduced plants) tend to be just sticks for half the year. Which would you prefer?
Managers, John and Caroline Dart are very passionate about natives. “We take all our cuttings from local plants and propagate seeds from local trees and shrubs. Why do we do this, you may ask? The local trees and shrubs are acclimatized to our harsh hot dry summers, cold winters and relatively low levels of rainfall. They are much tougher and hardier than some plants brought to Broken Hill from interstate.”
